Mission Office | Archdiocese of Los Angeles

Welcome to the web site for Mission Awareness among the peoples of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Whether you are Catholic, of another faith tradition, or are simply curious about how the Roman Catholic Church in Los Angeles serves the international community, it is great to have the chance to share some of the exciting things that are happening in the Missions.

As a brief introduction, when Catholics speak about the "Missions" we usually are referring to the more than 1050 dioceses (regions) which are aided by the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world to experience more deeply the Good News of Jesus Christ. Here in Los Angeles we join with this world-wide community through:

  • Prayer;
  • Educating ourselves and others about the needs of the peoples of the world;
  • Working to build a more just world community;
  • Sending missionaries – priests, religious brothers and sisters and laymen, laywomen and families;
  • Offering material support;
  • Developing relationships of care between peoples;
  • Sharing our faith in Christ who we experience through this
    community of Church.

Mission is essential to our being Catholic Christians. If we do not go out of ourselves, even with our weaknesses, then we shrivel up and lose sight of the Christ both within and outside of us. That is what we mean, then, when we say we are "Baptized for the World".
