The Pontifical Mission Societies will be celebrating big in 2022!
This year marks the 100 anniversary that the four societies; The Society for the Propagation of the Faith, The Missionary Childhood Association, The Society of St. Peter Apostle, and The Missionary Union of Priests and Religious each received their title of “Pontifical.” In 1922, their central administration was transferred to Rome to assist the Pope in his outreach to the missions.
In addition, 2022, marks the 150 year anniversary of the birth of blessed Paolo Manna, founder of the Missionary Union of Priests and Religious, who was born on January 16, 1872 in Avellino, Italy. The spirtual apostolate that he founded continues to address itself today to those called to bring Catholics to a better understanding of their baptismal responsibility for the church’s missionary work.
Most notably, 2022 is a huge year for Pauline Jaricot, the foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. In 1822, Pauline initiated efforts for the very first collection which supported the vast diocese of Louisiana, encompassing Florida Keys to Canada, as well as the missions of Kentucky and China. Pauline will be beatified in Lyon, France on May 22, 2022.
What do these celebrations mean
Let us hear about the importance of these celebrations from Archbishop Giampietro Dal Toso, the President of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Vatican City.
In preparation for her May 22nd beatification, a special documentary movie has been created to shed light on this incredible servant of the church. Please watch HEART OF A MISSIONARY, to learn more about the story of her beautiful amazing life.
Parish Celebration Material
Join us in celebrating the Beatification of Pauline Jaricot, as well as two important anniversaries: the 200th Anniversary of the foundation of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the 100th Anniversary of the granting of the title “Pontifical” to the Societies.
To celebrate in your parish community, please display the bilingual English and Spanish posters and prayer cards sent to your parish. Additionally, feel free to use the parish bulletin announcements, QR Code, and social media posts in English and Spanish to promote the celebration. To further celebrate, consider hosting a special screening of a HEART OF A MISSIONARY movie for your parishioners in your parish hall or grounds. This may be a perfect way to come together to cultivate new beginnings connecting your parishioners to the missionary nature of the church. As always contact our office if you need assistance with ideas on ways you can celebrate at your parish.
