Fr. Godfrey Tuhairwe is a diocesan Catholic priest from the diocese of Hoima in mid-weste rn part of Uganda. Uganda forms part of the five East African countries, that is Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi .
He is currently serving at Uganda Martyrs parish-Buseesa as pastor.
For the last ten years, Father Godfrey has been struggling to build a new central Parish Church. Ever since the parish began, about twenty-five years ago, there has never been a church built to suit the parish standard. What is there, is just a small Chapel with the capacity of about three hundred people! The new church has been under construction for a long time. The word “Parish” in this sense means the area over which Father is pastor.
The current population in the entire Parish area which he serves is over twenty thousand people of which 85 % are all Catholics. Because of the rapid population growth, the existing chapel can no longer accommodate the congregation that prays there. The Parish is divided into fourteen chapels, but still, this does not solve the problem.
The newly built church is expected to accommodate at least one thousand people in every Mass. A lot has already been done. What is remaining, are the glasses for the windows and then pews. He needs to raise at least $40,000 to complete the project.
The community he is serving is extremely poor but strong in their faith. They find a lot of consolation when they gather for prayers. Their daily income is about $1 on average. Father Godfrey humbly appeals to you our dear brothers and sisters to help him in addressing this challenge. It will be a great relief for him but more importantly for the community, he is serving to have a decent church built for the community.
Aware of how much pain the Corona Pandemic has caused to you, he stands with you in the different difficult times you may be going through. May you be comfortable by the heart t of Jesus and the intercession of mother Mary.
