Archdiocese of Changanacherry, India #2310
The John Paul II Pontifical Institute is the Indian session of the Pontifical Institute in Rome, established by Pope John Paul II to specialize in Marriage and Family Theology. Grounded in a profound understanding of the beauty and sacred mystery of marriage and family life, the institute is dedicated to promoting this vocation and equipping individuals to accompany families through the challenges of the modern world.
Over the years, the institute has successfully trained numerous priests, religious sisters, and laypersons. It offers two licentiate programs in Family Theology and Family Sciences, along with a diploma course in Family Ministry and Counseling. Many of our graduates serve as directors of pastoral care for families, counselors, and animators across various states in India and abroad, offering guidance and spiritual support.
The institute organizes national and international workshops, symposiums, and seminars on a wide range of topics related to marriage and family life throughout India. Additionally, we host family enrichment programs for couples and young people, providing valuable resources to strengthen relationships and navigate societal changes. Our aspiration is to expand these programs to reach communities where marriage and family life are increasingly influenced by evolving ideologies and contemporary challenges.
At the heart of the institute is our counseling center, which offers crucial support to couples, young people, and children facing issues such as divorce, domestic violence, substance abuse, and hesitancy toward marriage—challenges that continue to rise in today’s society.
We are also honored to welcome priests, religious sisters, and laypeople from African countries, some of whom have successfully completed their licentiate programs and are now actively engaged in family ministry within their dioceses.
Challenges and Needs: The institute faces significant financial constraints, particularly in supporting dioceses and congregations in Northern India, where economic hardships often prevent priests and sisters from accessing family studies. Since the institute relies solely on student fees, providing scholarships to deserving candidates remains a formidable challenge. We are committed to extending financial support to students from Northern India, ensuring that more aspiring individuals can pursue academic formation at our institute.
Our library, a vital academic resource, houses an extensive collection of theological books, journals, and research materials on marriage and family studies. However, the most authoritative publications in this field are often sourced from Europe and America, making subscriptions and acquisitions financially demanding. To continue enriching our library, we actively seek financial assistance.
Families deserve guidance, wisdom, and holiness on their journey, and the John Paul II Pontifical Institute remains steadfast in its mission to serve them. Through our licentiate and diploma programs, counseling services, and academic events, we strive to uphold the sanctity of marriage and empower those who minister to families with knowledge, compassion, and dedication.
The institute is deeply committed to utilizing donor contributions to form wise and holy family ministers, especially from economically disadvantaged regions of India. Additionally, providing students with the best academic resources remains a top priority.
