Daughters of Mary and Joseph, Uganda #1432

The Daughters of Mary and Joseph, Africa Province serve in different projects in Burundi, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. Here are some of the activities that we are involved in:
Education: For many years, the sisters have been in involved in education. In 2009, because of the large number of orphans in Uganda, we started a school hoping to help these vulnerable children. All of these children are boarders. At the moment, we have 350 children and the target is 1,000 children. Your generosity will help us achieve this.

We have a dormitory under construction. When complete, it will accommodate 300 pupils. Most children in our school live at least 10 miles away from the school and have to walk those miles to and from school. Some do not have stable homes and have to move from relative to relative. This disrupts their concentration in class or they drop out of school. Some are prone to human trafficking, child labor and sex abuse thus the need to keep them at school.

We are also constructing a staff house. Teachers live far from school and with no means of transport, for effectiveness and efficiency in their work, so they have to live at school.
Adult Numeracy and Literacy
Many women in Africa never went to school. In Uganda and Cameroon we teach women how to read, write and count. They also learn to make locally made crafts with local materials such as baskets, mats, pots which we help them to find market so that they can earn something small for their families. Much of their income goes to paying school fees for their children.

Due to many civil wars in Burundi, there are so many children on the streets. As instruments of mercy, we felt that the only way we can help these children is to start a kindergarten which has continued to become a Primary school. These kids need to be fed as well as helping them access education and also save them predators: human traffickers.
We also work in hospitals, Counseling, Retreat ministry, Secondary and Higher Education and offer palliative care to people living with HIV/AIDS.
We strive to serve our sisters and brothers whom society says, ‘There is no place for you here.’
