Institución Dalmanutá, Tijuana Mexico #1602

The Dalmanutá Institution is a congregation of priests, religious men and women founded in Uruguay in 1980 by Father Luis P. Montes SJ and Father Ernesto Popelka. The Institution was preceded by Father Montes’s dedicated work for over 20 years, focusing on the Ignatian spirituality of the Spiritual Exercises and how to adapt it to modern reality by integrating the contributions of contemporary sciences such as psychology, symbology, anthropology, and so on. Thus, drawing on various authors and grounded in his deep life of prayer, he developed a specific process of Spiritual Direction, carefully oriented to recovering and nurturing the religious experience of men and women.

In spiritual direction, a service always valued in the Church, the faithful, regardless of their condition, find a suitable space to be attended to individually in their needs and aspirations, in their questions and searches. Particularly in Dalmanutá, spiritual directors are men and women consecrated to God in poverty, celibacy, and obedience, dedicating ourselves completely to this apostolate.

Dedicating ourselves full-time to Spiritual Direction, we have established houses in Uruguay – Montevideo, San José and Trinidad -, in Argentina – Buenos Aires, Avellaneda -, in Brazil – Pelotas – and in Mexico – Tijuana -.

From spiritual direction and the personal growth processes that developed in that context, apostolic concerns have emerged and have been channeled in various ways. For example, in Uruguay, a  Neighborhood Center was established that offers various services to low-income people in the area, such as a daycare, a kinder, tutored schooling, craft workshops, sports, etc., in addition to a Catechism Center based on the Good Shepherd method. In Mexico, the Chapel of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, near Downtown, is served.

Since each consecrated person in Dalmanutá relies financially on the voluntary contributions of those under his or her direction, the institution’s corporate needs are sustained by donations from benefactors. One of the most pressing needs in Tijuana today is the formation of local vocations. This formation, specifically aimed at forming future spiritual directors, given the delicate nature of this apostolate, requires time, dedication, study, and a solid spiritual life, accompanied by a particular lifestyle that expresses our consecration to God in body and soul.

Serving the entire Church, particularly in Tijuana, we have been working with two priests and three religious since 1994. With the recent addition of another religious, the institution relies on the power the Spirit desires to bring to this foundation under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
