Mission Cooperative Plan Appeals 2020

Peace of Christ be with you from the Marian Sisters of Eucharistic Love (MASEL) and the Nazareth Home for God’s Children, West Africa (Ghana). We strongly hope the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected anything from your side.

The Marian Sisters of Eucharistic Love (MASEL) is a female religious congregation engaged in an active apostolate. Our mission is built around the Eucharist; “What greater act of Love can one make than to give one’s self whole heartedly and entirely for the relief of the afflicted?”

We give ourselves to God for the services of persons who are poor. We have the vocations which oblige us to help without discrimination to all kinds of people. The MASEL is congregation in the Diocese of Yendi. Why MASEL?

The Marian Sisters of Eucharistic Love (MASEL) discovered that children born with disabilities or birth defects are being killed in some parts of the Diocese of Yendi. One of the commonest beliefs of some of the people in the Yendi Diocese of the Northern Ghana is that children born with deformities are “spirit children” that is, evil and bad omens for their families and the community at large.

For example, children born with teeth, facial hair, pubic hair, both sex organs, fat eyes, abnormally large head (hydrocephalus), failure to walk after the age of three years; or a child who constantly bites the mother’s breast during breast feeding; or when a child is born at the time of severe hunger or loses the mother or both parents at the time of birth, a child who cries a lot at night, or whose parents are always sick after the birth of the child, born as twins, children with epilepsy, deaf and dump, blind and autistic are all considered “spirit children”, hence evil.

With this, such children are either killed or thrown into the forest to die. In order to rescue such victimized children, the MASEL tries to talk to the people into releasing them to the care of the church. These children need to be fed as some of them come to the Home malnourished, need to be clothed, provided with health care, loved and educated. This is our task and mission. MASEL has therefore established a home in Sang village to provide a sanctuary home, healthcare and education for these children. We also have the dream to reunite these children to their family and communities as we train them to be functional to the society and the world at large.

The home accommodates about 82 children and Sisters. The COVID-19 pandemic, is making things more difficult for us as all especially since the children are back from school and we are quarantining ourselves with no movement.

Although we are limited in the resources that are needed to operate and maintain the children’s home, we give ourselves to rosary, adorations, and prayers for our benefactors, friends, families, and the world, that all will be safe in this COVID pandemic.
