REACH OUT TO OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN PERU:

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet have an After-School Homework Program for elementary school children in Canto Chico in Peru. The program is housed in the sisters’ convent in a large room and dining room.  There are about 70 to 80 children that come daily to do their homework and for tutoring. With donations, the Sisters recently expanded the After-School Homework Program to include high school students.

Groups of women continue to cook meals for families that don’t have anything to eat.  The  high food prices and unemployment make it difficult for families to put food on the table.

On a weekly basis, there is a grocery store owner that has a truck driver who takes food items about to expire to the convent in Canto Chico. The truck driver comes and unloads the food. The Sisters pay the truck driver each time that he comes. This is possible through the donations that the sisters receive from the United States. The sisters then distribute the food to the women that cook meals for those in need.

These same women that cook meals also are involved in the sewing project in Canto Chico. With the help of  the Christian Brothers, the Sisters of St. Joseph provided  the funds from donations to build a room where the women are sewing clothes and items to sell to support their families.

Funds are needed for the following:

  • School Supplies and Educational Materials – Parents of the children and teenagers that come to the After-School Homework Program can’t afford to buy the school supplies that are needed for their children.  The sisters are providing the school supplies. Educational materials including books on science, recreational reading and computers are also needed so that students can work on their homework projects.
  • Stipends for the University Students-  University students that come from Monday to Friday to tutor the children in the After-School Homework Program are provided with small stipends. Since the After-School Program now includes high school students more funds are needed to provide the stipends.
  • Food, Medicines and Bus Fare: There is a sister-counselor at the convent in Canto Chico and often she finds out that there are families without food or need medicines or need help with bus fare for medical appointments.   On a daily basis, people come to the convent to ask for food.  With donations, the sisters in Canto Chico can continue to provide food, medicines and help with bus fare.
  • .Sewing Machines, Yardage and Sewing Supplies are needed for the Sewing Project. In order for the women to sew, they need more sewing machines, yardage and other sewing supplies.  Your donations will help the women to help themselves and their families.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet need donations through Mission Appeals so that they can continue to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Peru. For more information, visit www.csjcarondelet.org.
