What happens to your World Mission Sunday donation?

Ever wonder what happens when you place $5, $10, $20, or more into your special collection envelope for World Mission Sunday, or when you donate online for this important cause?

After your generous offering is placed in the collection basket, your pastor sends it—along with the gifts of fellow parishioners—to the local Pontifical Mission Societies Office in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Each spring, national directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies gather in Rome to meet with their counterparts from across the globe. During this meeting, they review the offerings made by the faithful from their respective countries and carefully assess the many projects and programs in the Missions that need assistance. After prayerful consideration, they vote on which projects most urgently require support so that the “Good News” of Jesus Christ may continue to reach the hearts of all people.

Your offering on World Mission Sunday could provide Bibles for catechists in Sierra Leone, help sustain a parish in India, or support Sisters in Sudan caring for orphans in the name of Jesus. It may also provide a priest in Thailand with a bicycle to travel between villages and bring the Eucharist to the faithful. No matter where your donation goes, it carries with it the love, peace, and salvation of Christ, transforming lives and spreading His Gospel across the world.

What can my World Mission Sunday donation help accomplish in the Missions?
A gift of $25 can provide a month’s support for a dedicated mission catechist, helping to spread the Good News and nurture the faith of communities. With a donation of $75, you support the invaluable work of Religious Sisters, whose selfless service brings hope and compassion to those in need. An offering of $100 provides a month’s assistance for a village mission, helping to sustain essential services and faith formation. In times of devastating disasters, such as the recent Cyclone that affected the people of Zumba, Malawi, your generosity extends a lifeline of support to those suffering in mission territories. Above all, your prayers are the most precious gift, as they strengthen and uplift the hearts of missionaries and those they serve. Together, through prayer and giving, we answer Christ’s call to share His love with the world.

I just donated money to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. How else can I help the Missions?
The life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, patroness of the Missions offers Catholics insight into how they may fulfill their Baptismal responsibility to share the Good News of Jesus without ever “going to the Missions.” St. Thérèse dedicated her life to the Missions by offering her prayers and her personal sacrifices – her pain, her loneliness, her suffering – for missionaries and those whom they served.

Another wonderful way to support the missions is by praying the World Mission Rosary. Each decade represents a different part of the world. When you are done, you have essentially prayed for the entire world. Learn more about the World Mission Rosary!
