Founded in 1933 in Tanzania, the Daughters of Mary is a religious community of native women headquartered in the Archdiocese of Tabora, Tanzania.  The sisters minister in eight different dioceses in Tanzania in such fields as healthcare, pastoral work, social work, education, and children, youth, and women’s development. Today there are over 425 professed sisters. Most of our ministries are directed to rural areas where we serve the marginalized groups and orphans.  We run various preschools, primary, and secondary schools including a boarding primary school for 250 deaf children who start at the age of 6.  We also run clinics and dispensaries in the remote rural areas of Tanzania.

The sisters need to install solar energy at their Motherhouse in Tabora, Tanzania. Lack of stable electricity causes equipment to fail that is used in performing their work, and meeting the basic needs of the sisters, especially the elderly sisters.   Generators do not meet the demands of the community, and gasoline costs are very high.  To start, they need $60,000 to purchase 200 400-watt solar panels at a cost of $300 each.

We have Sisters who give appeals who come from Tanzania with valid visas, and Sisters who are currently residing in Newark NJ and Omaha NE while furthering their education.  Depending on the number of parishes we are assigned, we can send multiple speakers on one weekend or speakers to speak on different weekends.  We are blessed with priests from Tanzania and Kenya who reside in the U.S. who can speak and celebrate Mass in fluent English and Spanish.  For multi-lingual parishes that still want a religious sister to come, the Sisters can bring with them their talk in Spanish, Italian and Vietnamese to be presented in their behalf at those Masses. We will work with the parish(es) to ensure that we have one or more of our qualified speakers available for our assigned weekends.  We will provide all substantiating documents and letters of suitability and adhere to all guidelines for Mission Appeals.
