Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny- Province of West Africa comprises three countries, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and The Gambia. Last year, Sierra Leone and the Gambia celebrated the bicentenary of Cluny’s active presence.

Over these years, the Missionary Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny have shared in the mission of Christ through their various apostolates which include education of children, healthcare, social work, and pastoral services to the marginalized in these societies. Their vision, “Liberate to empower”,  has been their driving force as they continue to develop the human person wherever they find themselves.

The Sisters in the province deliberately choose to work with the less privileged people in the rural areas where ignorance and lack of education have become deadly diseases that hinder the progress of the human person. In these rural areas, people, especially children, have little or no access or opportunity to attend school which the sisters believe will help bring them out of poverty. Through their schools, the sisters have educated children who had no hope of receiving education and now some are serving in prestigious positions in their society.

The sisters work in areas where superstitions see any physical or mental impediment as attributed to witchcraft. For example, epilepsy is either bought for the person or given by a wizard as a punishment for an offense committed, hence no cure for it. A lot of people who are affected by this illness usually commit suicide because they find no hope to live. The sisters, through health education and clinical care, tirelessly work to eliminate this misconception as many people with epilepsy come to the clinics for free healthcare and education.

The hearing impairment education complex built by the sisters has saved many children from societal stigma and misery, and with support from donations, they are now in higher levels of education.

Due to certain traditional beliefs and practices, some parents do not feed their children with certain protein foods resulting in malnourishment and a high level of infant mortality. Through the high protein food preparation program and the general health education organized by sisters, babies, and children are given the chance to live.

Through social and pastoral services, the sisters support and give hope to the elderly who have been abandoned by their families. They promote good family life and support couples and single parents. With the help of donations, opportunities are provided for them to begin their own small businesses.

Following the footsteps of Anne Marie Javouhey, the foundress, the sisters continue to do “A Little Good” by bringing hope, love, and compassion to the communities in which they find themselves. The sisters depend on the help of generous and kind donors.

As we continue this mission of education, healthcare, and social work for God’s children, we ask for your support so the sisters can continue to change lives and transform our world. Thank you and God bless you for your generosity and kindness.
