Sons of Mary Mother of Mercy Nigeria #1626

Sons of Mary Mother of Mercy is a male Religious Congregation founded in 1970 by Most Rev. Anthony Gogo Nwedo, C. S. Sp, of blessed memory. He was the first bishop of the Diocese of Umuahia, Nigeria.

The purpose of its foundation is to work for the glory of God, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and for the salvation of souls. Thus, members, following the footsteps of Christ, bear witness to the infinite mercy of God through a life of compassion, forgiveness, and kindness; in this way, make their lives signs of God’s love for sinful world. It is a Missionary Congregation of Priests and Brothers and the first indigenous Religious Congregation for men founded in Africa by an African, for the worldwide mission.

The priest members of our Congregation teach in schools and minister in parishes, while members who are religious brothers produce sacred vestments, teach in schools, teach catechisms in parishes and care for the sick and needy. Our Charism is – bearing witness to the Mercy of God, following the footsteps of Christ the Savior and Mary our Mother of Mercy. This Mercy is expressed in compassion, forgiveness, and kindness.

Over 30 of our priests are currently providing Pastoral care in different Archdioceses/dioceses and Hospital/prison Chaplaincies in the United States of America.

Our Projects:

Supporting our School Apostolate

One of our major apostolates is Catholic formal education. We run Catholic high and elementary schools in Africa to give the children of the poorest of the poor an opportunity to receive western and moral education. Our congregation builds schools and offers scholarships to the indigent population. Currently, we are building some classroom blocks and hostels in schools managed by our brothers. These projects are at their different stages of construction. We need your support to help us offer sound and catholic education to these less privileged population.

Training of Seminarians for The Catholic Priesthood

There is a huge vocation to the Catholic priesthood in Nigeria, but we do not have enough financial capacity to cater for them in their respective formation houses. Based on our limited financial resources, we cannot admit all the candidates who aspire to the seminary for the discernment of their vocation to the Catholic priesthood.

Presently, we have over 60 seminarians desiring to become priests. We need you. I believe that you are always ready and willing to bear true witness to the compassionate heart of Christ Jesus, through going to mission by giving. As Catholics, united, by our faith in God and by our membership of the body of Christ, we beckon on you to align with us in raising laborers to work in the vineyard of Christ.
