We are the Vicariato Apostólico de San José del Amazonas (Apostolic Vicariate of St Joseph of the Amazon, in English). The vicariate is located in the northeasternmost part of the Peruvian rainforest on the Amazon River and its tributaries – an area greater in size than the state of Wisconsin. We attend 468 distant villages arranged in 16 parishes or “mission posts”, where there are no roads and the only transportation is via the river.

Our main goal is to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to these remote indigenous Amazon communities. All services: healthcare ministry, education, social, spiritual, and sacramental in the vicariate are served by our 60 or so dedicated missionaries: 80+% are religious sisters and lay missionaries, coming from Mexico, Poland, Peru, Brazil, and the United States. Only 8 are priests.

The Vicariate remains a young mission, as yet unable to self-support. The area produces minimal human and economic resources for the people.

Funds are used to satisfy the basic needs of the mission posts and missionaries in their daily evangelization work, such as housing, boat fuel, and food to visit villages in the rainforest, liturgical materials to organize Christian communities, form young people to be pastoral agents in their communities, and take the gospel where it is most needed.

The support of the parishes in the Mission Cooperative program will help ensure that the San Jose del Amazonas missionaries are able to follow the call to serve the people in this remote and very poor area – a real sign of hope for the people who witness the care provided as a reflection of God’s love.

El Vicariato Apostólico de San José del Amazonas está ubicado en la parte noreste de la selva peruana, a lo largo del río Amazonas y sus afluentes, ocupando un área más grande que el estado de Wisconsin. Atendemos a 468 aldeas remotas distribuidas en 16 parroquias o “puestos misionales”, donde no hay caminos y el único medio de transporte es por río.

Nuestro principal objetivo es llevar el evangelio de Jesucristo a estas comunidades indígenas amazónicas remotas. Todos los servicios: ministerio de salud, educación, social, espiritual y sacramental en el vicariato son atendidos por nuestros 60 o más misioneros dedicados: más del 80% son religiosas y misioneros laicos, provenientes de México, Polonia, Perú, Brasil y Estados Unidos. Solo 8 son sacerdotes.

El Vicariato sigue siendo una misión joven, aún incapaz de autosostenerse. La zona produce recursos humanos y económicos mínimos para la población.

Los fondos se utilizan para satisfacer las necesidades básicas de los puestos misionales y misioneros en su trabajo diario de evangelización, como vivienda, combustible para botes y alimentos para visitar las aldeas en la selva, materiales litúrgicos para organizar comunidades cristianas, formar jóvenes para ser agentes pastorales en sus comunidades y llevar el evangelio donde más se necesita.

El apoyo de las parroquias en el programa de Cooperación Misionera ayudará a garantizar que los misioneros de San José del Amazonas puedan seguir el llamado para servir a las personas en esta área remota y muy pobre, siendo un verdadero signo de esperanza para quienes son testigos del cuidado proporcionado, como un reflejo del amor de Dios.
